In North Carolina, Attorney General Jeff Jackson is advocating for financial restitution for local businesses and consumers affected by federal tariffs. The call for reimbursement follows a Supreme Court ruling that deemed these tariffs unlawful. Jackson's recent press release highlights that the tariffs imposed by the federal government resulted in a staggering $3.5 billion in additional costs for North Carolinians. “North Carolina’s businesses and families paid $3.5 billion for tariffs that a court has now ruled were illegal,” Jackson stated, emphasizing the impact on everyday expenses. “That money came straight out of people's grocery bills and small business budgets. The administration told the court it would pay people back, and now they need to do it.” In light of the ruling, Attorney General Jackson is proposing that Congress enact legislation to mandate reimbursement for importers, along with interest. He is also encouraging businesses that have transferred tariff-related costs to consumers to consider issuing refunds. At present, the process for importers to receive refunds is cumbersome and inefficient, as it requires them to request refunds individually. Alarmingly, only 6% of importers are effectively positioned to receive these payments. Jackson's campaign for refunds has garnered support from attorneys general across several states, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont, and Virginia, collectively voicing their concerns regarding the financial strain placed on consumers and businesses alike.
